Why supplement with omega-3?
Omega-3 is divided into three fatty acids: ALA, EPA and DHA. People generally ingest the fatty acid ALA, because it is found in vegetable oils. EPA and DHA, on the other hand, are found in fish, crustaceans, shellfish and algae and therefore people generally do not get enough of them to achieve health benefits. As an example: very few people eat salmon every day. That is why omega-3 has become a very popular supplement, an addition to your daily diet.
How much EPA and DHA do you need as a person to get health benefits?
Research shows: at least 1000mg and that is EPA and DHA added together. With many brands the EPA and DHA are so low that you often have to take 4 capsules if you want to exceed 1000 mg. Bee Dutch Giant You only need to take two capsules of Omega 3 per day with a meal and you will be well above it: 1370mg.
What health benefits are there?
Actually… too many to mention. Therefore, a brief summary of the benefits for you as an athlete!
Strength training, recovery and muscle soreness.
Omega 3 appears to play a significant role in the muscle recovery process. According to some studies, omega-3 fatty acids could reduce muscle pain and have a positive influence on the recovery process. Additionally, some studies suggest that omega 3 may also improve the results of strength training by promoting blood flow to the muscles. This could result in less muscle breakdown and less acidification of the muscles. In addition, it is claimed that omega 3 can contribute to faster muscle recovery and reduce inflammation.
Fat loss
There are studies suggesting that Omega 3 fatty acids may be beneficial for promoting weight loss. The fatty acids may activate genes involved in burning fat, which allows the body to use fat reserves. Moreover, Omega 3 fatty acids are believed to be able to speed up metabolism, which plays a crucial role in maintaining a healthy weight and aiding in weight loss. In addition, it is claimed that Omega 3 fatty acids can also help prevent too much fat from being stored in the cells. To learn more about the studies that support these claims, see the resources below.
Please note: these health claims have not (yet) been officially accepted and approved. Further research will be needed to definitively prove this. The studies used can be found at the bottom of the page.
